How Lack of Technology Integration Saps Provider Productivity

Healthcare providers today are turning to technology to solve the many needs of their businesses. From setting patient appointments to billing, they are looking for solutions that make their lives easier, not harder.

Unfortunately, as Updox’s 2019 Healthcare Technology Report shows, not all of the technology they are buying has been designed with integration and productivity in mind. And it’s a source of major frustration, because when technology doesn’t work well with other systems, it causes additional work and stress.

For example, healthcare providers often develop their own workarounds or turn to inefficient, low-tech solutions just to keep their businesses functioning. Instead of caring for patients, they spread themselves thin working with systems that don’t fully support their needs. Ultimately, they are left paying more for a mix of solutions made by different vendors rather than one system that integrates with their most business-critical software.

No wonder the more than 600 respondents that earlier this year took Updox’s survey on technology frustrations ranked lack of integration as their top pain point – surpassing other challenges including lack of features, poor design, ease of use, outdated software, outdated hardware and security.

Multiple Logins and Lack of Integration Are Spreading Staff Thin

A majority of respondents in Updox’s 2019 Healthcare Technology Report use four or more different technology solutions, from different vendors, to manage daily functions, including document management, internal messaging, appointments, reminders, forms, payments and more. This multitude of tech tools creates two key productivity challenges:

  1. Frequent switching between technology tools during the course of the day eats into time that could be spent on more valuable activities. If time equals money, when precious hours are wasted logging in and out of multiple systems that may not even be designed for the healthcare industry, those costs are impacting your bottom financial line and staff productivity.
  2. Point solutions were designed to tackle singular problems. Therefore, they inherently weren’t developed to work with each other. Without seamless integration, healthcare providers spend more time looking at computer screens and less time with patients and performing activities that keep them profitable. The cost of this lack of integration is a drain on productivity that is felt by physicians and their staff who feel burned out at alarming levels.
